Welcome to Shoeless and Bark Traveling Buddy Project!
Each participating school will have the box for 3 weeks.
There are 5 days of activities that you are welcome to fill into any
time during the 3 weeks.
Each
day will consist of an
objective, a task, a written journal question & also a question asked
by Shoeless and Bark which will be posted to the blog.
You will also have worksheets
and links to
websites to help you complete each day's goals.
However, feel free to implement your own ideas
or lesson plans as well.
Day
One:
Getting to Know Lewis and Clark &
Why They Were Chosen to Explore New Territory
Today's Objective:
Students will be introduced to Lewis and Clark, Thomas Jefferson, The
Louisiana Purchase, The Unexplored United States, & skills they might
need on the expedition
Task
of the Day:
Students will work on provided worksheets in order to gain a better
understanding of Lewis and Clark.
Written
Journal Question of the Day:
If you had to decide TODAY which friend you would take on a long trip
with you, who would you choose and why.
Shoeless
and Bark Blog Question:
What is the name of your school? Where is it located? What is the nearest
MAJOR city? What is your nearest famous landmark??
Day Two:
Mapping Out Your School
Today's Objective:
Students will learn about mapping skills, create a legend, and being detail
oriented.
Task
of the Day:
Your entire class will create a map of your school. You may work
in small groups to create certain areas or journey around your school
and create 1 large map. Students will need to be introduced to creating
a legend.
Written
Journal Question of the Day:
Why was it important for the Corps of Discovery to create a map of
their trip?

How many classrooms are at your school? What is the name of your principal??
Why was your school named what it is named??
Day Three:
Meeting New People, Sacagawea, & Seaman
Today's
Objective:
Students will become acquainted with Sacagawea, Seaman, York, and other
members of the Corps of Discovery. They will understand that each member
had skills which would benefit the entire group.
Task
of the Day:
Your entire class will wander around your school campus and meet
5 people. You will ask each person a series of 5 questions and then present
them with a small token of appreciation of their time. (For the younger
students, you might wish to invite 5 people to come into your classroom.)

Question of the Day:
What are 3 reasons you think made Lewis take a dog with him on this trip?

and Bark Blog Question:
How long has your teacher taught at this school? What is your teacher's
favorite subject to teach and why? Does your class have any pets? What
are they and what are their names?
Day Four:
Becoming A Naturalist
Today's
Objective:
Students will understand that one of the jobs of the Corps of Discovery
was to identify new plants, trees, and flowers they discovered on their
trip. Older students can be introduced to the fact that certain plants
can only grow in certain areas. (ie -- Redwoods do not grow in Missouri)
**You might wish to show parts of the movie "Master and Commander"
when they journey to the Galapogos to gather new species.
Task
of the Day:
Gather, draw, and identify flowers, plants, and trees you have on
your school campus.
Journal
Question of the Day:
Both Lewis and Clark learned skills while they were children that helped
them on this trip. What are two skills you are learning now which will
help you when you grow up?

What are some plants that grow around your school? Are these plants able
to grow anywhere or are they grown only in certain areas?? What are some
trees that grow around your school? Are these trees able to grow anywhere
or are they only grown in certain areas.
Day Five:
The Corps of Discovery and Supplies
or
Indians on the Trail (you choose)
Today's
Objective:
Students will gain understanding on items which were necessary to take
on the expedition. Students will be introduced to the different
methods of travel used.
OR
Students will gain understanding on the different Indian Tribes encountered
on the trip and the importance of establishing communication with them.
Task
of the Day:
Students will create spreadsheets (or flow charts) determining the
cost of supplies if Lewis and Clark were to travel today.
OR
Students will identify 3 of the tribes met on the expedition and compare
and contrast them.
Journal
Question of the Day:
If you were invited to go on a long journey, what 3 items would you take
on your trip and why??

Does your classroom have daily jobs to be done by students?? What are
these jobs and how is it decided which student performs which job?? Are
there any favorite jobs??? What jobs do you need that you don't have??
