Join us next year for Pumpkin Seed Count II

One teacher had some very nice thoughts which I thought I would share with you........

Hi Jen,
Our First Grade class completed our counting! Before that,
- We took a trip to the local pumpkin patch, selected our pumpkins. We decided to do this as a team activity, so each table got their own pumpkin. The number we would submit would be the highest count.
- We read about pumpkin growth cycles and stories with pumpkins.
- We made pumpkin books.
- We carved out our pumpkin and scooped out the insides (yuck! was a repeated comment). Pumpkins were given away in a raffle, taking it home in time for Halloween.

In the counting, we turned this into a counting by tens project. Each child drew circles on paper towels, then made piles of tens on their towels. As the numbers got bigger, the children's eyes got bigger! It was a wonderful hands-on experience in seeing how high numbers could go.

We are drying our seeds and will use them this spring to plant pumpkins for next year's class.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate. My First Graders loved it!
